New report about bentonite clay!

2017-04-11
In Sweden's future final repository for spent nuclear fuel, bentonite clay has an important role as buffer material between the canister with the radioactive fuel and the surrounding rock. The clay should, among other things protect the canister from the sulfide produced by sulfide-producing bacteria in the underground.

Strict requirements are therefore imposed on the clay density which must be high in order for the barrier to function as intended. But exactly how high density that is required has not previously been known. This has been tested by Micans for three different bentonite clays in the years 2013 - 2016. The results of the experimental series have now been summarized into a report that can be downloaded from the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company's website by clicking on the cover below.
