Docksides in Sundsvall are being eaten by microorganisms

2015-08-03
It was in March this year that the Swedish Transport Administration reported Micans' results where the iron-eating bacterium Gallionella with sulphur bacteria had attacked the eight bridge foundations of the Sundsvall Bridge.

The foundations are built with sheet pile at the bottom of the Bay of Sundsvall. The alarming was that the design was completely new and that the bacteria has taken hold of the steel very quickly. The alarm came as a wake-up call to the Sundsvall municipality which started to investigate the steel structures of the docksides around Sundsvallsfjärden. Now Micans has shown that the dockside supports are also attacked by the bacteria.
