Micans in Åtvidaberg

Once again tests have been made on water from contaminated rock vaults. These vaults were previously owned by the government and intended for supply of fuels in the case of hostile situations during the cold war. They are now emptied and closed since many years. In the beginning of June a site close to Åtvidaberg was investigated by Micans.

Water samples were collected from three depths in the vault itself. The temperature was high, as well as the activity by the present ants. Water samples were also collected in the draining pipe from the vault, a pipe that ends in the nearby Närstadsån. In this pipe an artificial sand trap was installed to mimic the situation when the water reaches the stream. Sediment samples were collected from the sand filter as well as from the bottom of the stream. With our newly developed method for analysis of highly moist sediment we will measure the amount of petroleum products moving in the water. It is already from earlier examinations evident that heavy hydrocarbons move with particles that might sediment in the stream.
