Micans teaches microbiology and disposal of radioactive waste

2016-10-28
During the past week Micans has taught a course in our own premises in Mölnlycke. The course was about how microorganisms can influence future final repositories for radioactive waste. Six participants from across Europe attended the course this time.

The scientific community realize more and more how important it is to take into account micro-organisms in risk assessment when planning the construction of a final repository for radioactive waste. We at Micans are experts in this particular field and therefore provide a course where you can learn more about microbial processes and how microorganisms affect their environment and can degrade metals and other materials. This is particularly important in a repository context where a small but ongoing microbial activity can have large negative effects on a design that is planned to remain intact for approximately 200 000 years. 6 representatives from Finland, the Czech Republic, France and Switzerland, all of which are working with, or do research on these issues attended the course this time.
