The Sundsvall bridge is being consumed by iron eating bacteria
2015-03-12
Micans has discovered that the load bearing sheet pile is corroding much faster than anticipated. This is due to so called microbial corrosion. The steel has been attacked by iron-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the family Gallionellaceae together with sulphate-reducing bacteria. Micans' researchers have been experts on the bacterial family Gallionellaceae and on sulphate-reducing bacteria for a long time.
The discovery attracted great interest in media and Micans is now involved in a research project that will investigate how the bacterial attack can be limited or stopped.
